Importance of Breakfast

Eating breakfast is not optional for those who wish to stay healthy. There are many proven benefits to starting a day with a balanced breakfast including improved performance, weight control and increased energy. Making breakfast a part of a daily routine can provide an added boost to the day.

Studies have shown several health benefits associated with eating a healthy breakfast including:

• Reduced cholesterol levels

• General improvements to concentration and performance

• Increased endurance and strength

• A diet more complete in the essential vitamins, nutrients and minerals that the body needs

• Better control of hunger and thus control of weight

• Blood sugars are more stable throughout the day

While all of these benefits are desirable to improve overall health, it is essential that the breakfast is well rounded and healthy. The same results do not occur from high sugar or carb rich meals.

The best breakfast for the body is high in lean protein and low in fat and sugars. Some of the best foods for breakfast are combinations of eggs, fruit, oatmeal, whole grain cereals, peanut butter and yogurt. The key is to make a meal that includes whole grains, protein, a serving of fruit or vegetables, and fiber. Staying away from sugary foods will keep blood sugar in line and avoid spikes of energy followed by a mid-morning crash. Stick to complex carbohydrates and fiber rich foods to feel satisfied longer.

The health benefits of eating breakfast are difficult to ignore. Finding the time to prepare and eat a balanced meal can make a difference in performance immediately. Breakfast is a critical part of a healthy diet and should never be skipped.
